Public Finances in EMU 2013The European Union and the euro area economies have been through another difficult year, but there are signs of improvement on the horizon. Thanks to policy measures taken at the EU, euro area and national level, financial tensions subsided and market sentiment towards euro area Member States has improved. In spite of that, the economy has continued to be weak and the recovery has not started yet. However, the recent improvement in the high-frequency indicators gives hope that the recovery in the EU will finally commence in the second half of this year, as forecast in the Commission Spring forecasts.

Macroeconomic imbalances, Spain 2013 In May 2012, the Commission concluded in the first In-Depth Review (IDR) that Spain was experiencing very serious imbalances, in particular as regards developments related to the external position, private sector debt levels and the financial sector. Financial assistance programme for the recapitalisation of financial institutions in Spain 2013. Spain has maintained access to financial markets and investor confidence showed tentative signs of stabilisation, albeit at a low level. The recent decision by the European Council to advance towards a banking union by introducing a Single Supervisory Mechanism and the release of the European Commission's (EC) blueprint on how to complete the Economic and Monetary Union contributed to restoring investor confidence. In Spain, net borrowing from the Eurosystem declined and the outflow of non-resident deposits came down

Basta! an end to austerity. Democratic and economic renewal in the EU. Europe is still struggling – and failing – to come out of the Great Recession triggered by reckless global financial institutions in 2008. The European Union, especially the euro area, has been seriously damaged by the neo-liberal policies pursued by the conservative majority to tackle the wrong problems – at the cost of millions of victims made scapegoats for the crisis.

EP The Role of the EU in promoting boader trasatlantic parnership The European Union should promote a new transatlantic partnership encompassing both North and South America. Such cooperation is necessary not only to respond to competitive challenges from countries like China and India, but also to help develop new markets in Africa and to promote strong partnerships across the South Atlantic. Guide to Social Innovation Social innovation is in the mouths of many today, at policy level and on the ground. It is not new as such: people have always tried to find new solutions for pressing social needs. But a number of factors have spurred its development recently. There is, of course, a link with the current crisis and the severe employment and social consequences it has for many of Europe's citizens. On top of that, the ageing of Europe's population, fierce global competition and climate change became burning societal challenges.
