 Labour Demand in Europe continues excep for the public sector

According to the October edition of the European Vacancy Monitor, job offers and hiring have shown an increase (19 % for vacancies, 24 % for job finders and 12 % for public employment services vacancies) in the first quarter of 2011 compared to the same quarter in 2010.

Monthly Labour Market Sheet October 2011The level of unemployment in the EU has become stuck at 9.5%. After a clear decrease between October 2010 and March 2011 (-2.4 %, 555 000 persons) and an increase in the following three months (+1.0 %, 222 000 persons), the number of people looking for work in the EU stabilised in July and edged down slightly in August (-0.3 %, 62 000 persons), to 22.8 million.

Skill mismatch among migrants and ethnic minorities in Europe shows that migrants from outside the European Union - over half of the total migrant population of 6.8% of the employed population of the EU – typically find jobs beneath their real skills level (‘overeducation’), while ethnic minorities are more likely to lack the educational level required by jobs ("undereducation"). Youth were hit disproportionately hard by the recession. In the first quarter of 2011, the unemployment rate for young people (aged 15 to 24) was 17.4% in the OECD area compared with 7% for adults (aged 25 and over).
